Can the Internet be exhibited?
24 hours a day search engines seek pictures on the internet. "Timescape"
presents a glimpse into these searches as they happen, in real time.
The Timescape landscapes appear as fleeting electronic canvases through
an accumulation of random photographic mosaics.
The contents of the landscapes are different with every new connection
and each time the page is refreshed. According to the time of day, a generic
grid will appear...it's up to the user to define the elements in the matrix.
Appropriation and distraction come into play in this project, there is
little if any interactivity involved. Observation and contemplation are
paramount; watching the evolution of a landscape as it contructs itself.
Occasionally the flux of images will be punctuated by an error window
further reducing the interactivty of the experience.
This "Real-Time Landscape" refreshes itself each hour. The entire
"Timescape" tableaux is replaced with new images emphasizing
the ephemeral nature of the actual landscape you find yourself in. omment

24h sur 24h des recherches d'images sont effectuées sur Internet,
"Timescape" permet de visualiser des instants de recherches
en temps réel.
Des fragments de l'Internet, sous forme de tableaux-paysages, sont présentés
dans une accumulation de mosaïques, dans une fenêtre ou encore
dans un diaporama ; ces ensembles vont se succéder et laisser apparaître
des contenus aléatoires.
Ces paysages seront différents à chaque connection et à
chaque chargement de la page. Suivant la tranche horaire dans laquelle
vous êtes : une trame générale se dessinera... à
vous de définir quelle en est la matrice...
"Timescape" nous donne à voir une partie d'un flux continu
transitant sur le réseau par l'intermédiaire de requêtes
transmises à un moteur de recherche d'images.
Dans ce projet, appropriation et détournement sont de mise, pas
ou peu d'interactivité : juste voir, regarder contempler ce paysage
qui se construit et se déconstruit sous vos yeux. Ce flux incessant
sera parfois rythmé par l'apparition d'une fenêtre d'erreur
réduisant ainsi l'interractivité à la confirmation
de ce message.
Ce "Real-Time Landscape" se recharge, toutes les heures comme
pour mieux signifier que le paysage dans lequel vous vous êtes attardé,
est et restera éphémère...

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Both net and video artist, Reynald Drouhin
has presented his work in Montreal at the Biennale de Montreal and at
the festival Champ Libre manifestation internationale video et art electronique
in 1999. He has also participated in ISEA 97 Chicago, Imagina à
Monaco (1998) and the Web Art Festival « Web bar » (1999)
in Paris. Drouhin has received the Grand Prix at the Cyberfestival in
Rueil-Malmaison in 1999 and the Multimedia price at DRAC Auvergnes/Vidéoformes
in Clermont-Ferrand in 1997. Since 1990, Reynald work on many Web art
sites and numeric projects. Artist-teacher in Fine Art at Rennes in France
since 2000.
